Lyn Asselta
"Pastel, as a medium, is immediate. I can pick up a color and draw exactly what is in my mind at the moment. The combination of the softness of pastel and their ultimate permanence is very appealing to me. I find pastel to be absolutely perfect for conveying the timeless quality of landscapes that are mystifyingly beautiful. From the rocky coast of Maine to the beaches and colorful coastal marshes of Florida and the Southeast, to the ever-changing scenery of the Smoky Mountains of the Carolinas, I have been fortunate to have spent the better part of my life living in the midst of landscapes that never fail to inspire something deep down inside me."

"Looked
at closely, the simplest things and ordinary objects in
nature reveal an innocence and complexity which I believe
mirrors all of life. In selecting images and objects for
my compositions, I find that abstraction affords me the
freedom to convey essential feelings and impressions without
conceptual interference or the lengthy translation of personal
interpretation."

Marie Groves
"Fabulous mosaic work is found throughout the architecture and design of St. Augustine. Looking at the work of contemporary artists gave me the inspiration to learn this craft for myself. Each of my pieces presents a unique challenge as far as design and execution." Groves is a fan of bugs, reptiles, sea life, and plants, and her subjects tend toward nature. The addition of shells, mirror, brass, and beads adds interest to each piece as well as presenting a challenge to this self-taught artist.

I am concerned with in the creation of art, is that I
express the inner experience of whatever inspires me in

Mary Hubley
Mary Hubley's oil paintings are of the North Florida salt marshes, sandy beaches, and the people who enjoy them. She connects to the energy of a place and tries to capture the emotional response to it. "Before I ever lay down a brushtroke, I consider what the subject is saying to me. What does it vibrate? Softness? Excitement? What does the air smell like -- lavender meadows or salty breezes? Is it a hot day? Are there deep, cooling shadows? What do I hear -- seagulls or car horns? The answers to these kinds of questions direct the soul of my painting."

DT LaVercombe
DT LaVercombe graduated from Western Michigan University in 1975 B.F.A.
"After more than a half century of traveling this earth, living,
creating and experiencing the journey, I have formulated many opinions
and seen many things. We in this country and on this earth are
stressed to the limits of our tolerances. The hustle and bustle of our
daily struggle to survive is overwhelming. I believe that we all need
to sit down, sip a glass of good wine, take a deep breath and relax.
Look around, colors, light, textures dance in the never ending ballet.
It will be alright. Turn off the network news, cook a nice meal and
share it with friends and family, go look at the sunset. Celebrate the
gift of your life and count your blessings. This is what I attempt to
show in my art, there is beauty all around us. It is ours for the
taking.
"The measure of success in ones life is manifest in . . . a body of
work."

Jerry Melfi
Jerry Melfi grew up in Columbus, OH and attended The Ohio State University School of Art. After moving to St. Augustine, Florida in 1971, he continued his artistic expression by drawing with pencil and pen using basic washes for rich color effects. In 1980, Jerry began teaching himself the various skills of controlling the watercolor medium. Finally in the early 90's, Jerry was confident enough with this medium to pursue his goal. Using large brushes to achieve a lose feel to his paintings with as few brush strokes as possible. |

B.Tatter -
Batik Artist
Wendy has been doing batik since 1980 when she attended Instituto Allende in San Miguel, Mexico. The almost backward way of creating a design intrigued Wendy so much that batik has been her main creative outlet ever since.
Wendy has traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, as well as Central and South America exibiting her work along the way. Her batiks often reflect the people and places she has enjoyed throughout her travels.

Shafique
Farooqui
The creative qualities, skillful handling of media,
intellectual response to the technique are the salient
features of Shafique Farooquis paintings.
Creation of new worlds, with or without familiar objects,
is a valuable and visual experience.
The shapes suggest drama and movement by creating sense
of space, while the lines gives the dynamic force and
rhythm, like Paul Lea.
Taking a line for a walk is Farooquis unique style.

Jonathan Terranova
Jonathan’s work is an exploration of the formal decision making process within an often anti-academic language, Graffiti. This influence is accompanied by the modernist movement of abstract expressionism. The layering and enormity in size of his paintings create an overall sense of the overwhelming. Similar to the experience one may feel while walking through a large city. His works play with these different languages through his use of his pseudonym, Jist, and his variation in calligraphy that parallels the complexity of marks in abstract expressionism. His pseudonym acts as symbol of infatuation that has to be constantly reinvented along with his text that is repeated, appropriated, and endlessly recycled within each painting. |
